California State University Long Beach Admissions

Cal State Long Beach has recently moved to a competitive admission policy, targeting talented, bright students. This has resulted in admissions standards that require an applicant to meet a higher eligibility index. The eligibility index is used across the Cal State system to determine an applicant’s eligibility, and is calculated using a combination of high school grade point average and ACT or SAT test score. The eligibility index can be calculated in one of two ways: multiplying the applicant’s grade point average by 800 and adding it to the SAT score, or multiplying grade point average by 200 and adding ten times the ACT score. To qualify for Long Beach’s new competitive admissions policies, students must have at least a 2.0 grade point average. Those California residents that do meet that minimum grade point average must have a score of 30 on the ACT or 1300 on the SAT to post a qualifying eligibility index score. Likewise, California residents with a 2.99 grade point average must score 10 on the ACT or 510 on the SAT. The requirements are significantly higher for out-of-state applicants. Out-of-state applicants must have at least a 2.45 grade point average, which would require a score of 36 on the ACT or 1550 to meet the appropriate eligibility index. California residents with a grade point average of 3.0 or more and non-residents with a grade point average of 3.61 or more qualify with any test score.

California State University, Long Beach had an undergraduate admissions deadline of November 30, 2004 for the fall 2005 semester. The application fee is $55. Applications can be submitted on-line. Students who are enrolled in high school at the time of application will need to have their official final high school transcripts sent after graduation to the Admissions Office.

As part of their application, students should submit ACT or SAT test scores. If a high school transcript is needed prior to graduation, the Admissions Office will request it. Students must complete the California State requirements for high school course-work at a 2.0 GPA or better. These include 4 units of English, 3 units of mathematics, 2 units of history and social studies, 2 units of science, 2 units of a foreign language, 1 year of visual or performing arts, and 1 year of electives. Students in some majors for which more applications are received than can be accommodated will be admitted as “pre-majors” and will have to meet supplemental criteria to remain in the major after 60 units.

Transfer students and international students will have varying requirements depending upon their prior educational background. Transfer students who apply for some majors will have to meet high standards than others.

Students applying to the graduate programs at California State University, Long Beach should consult the individual department and/or school to which they are applying. Applications can be submitted on-line, and the application fee is $55. General requirements include the GRE or other appropriate test scores (such as the GMAT) and a bachelor’s degree. The graduate application deadline varies with the program for master’s degrees; the deadline for the doctoral program is February 20 for the fall semester.
