California State University Long Beach Athletics
The Cal State Long Beach 49ers compete in the NCAA Division I and the Big West Conference. Men’s sports include basketball, baseball, golf, track, cross country, volleyball, and water polo. Women’s sports include basketball, softball, golf ,track, cross country, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and water polo. Perhaps one of the most dynamic and recognizable facilities in all of college sports is the Walter Pyramid at Cal State Long Beach. This bright blue pyramid is home to the University’s basketball team and recently celebrated its ten-year anniversary. The Pyramid has a seating capacity of 5,000 and is especially well suited to media production. In their first season in the Pyramid, the 49ers posted an 11-2 record at home. Their record overall since the Pyramid’s construction has been 92-54 or a .630 winning percentage. The cobalt blue Pyramid is 18 stories high and can be seen from nearly anywhere in Long Beach. The Pyramid cost $22 million to construct. Other athletic facilities include the Jack Rose track & field stadium, and facilities for softball, swimming, and tennis. The Long Beach Center for Student-Athlete Services provides student-athletes with the academic support and resources necessary to be successful academically, in addition to their success on the field.
California State University, Long Beach is an NCAA Division I School. In athletics, it is known as Long Beach State University. Teams compete in the Big West Conference. Men’s sports include basketball, baseball, golf, track & field, cross country, volleyball, and water polo. Women’s sports include basketball, softball, golf, track & field, cross country, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and water polo. The sports teams are supported by a spirit squad, which includes a cheer and dance team. There is also a mascot, “Prospector Pete,” and a spirit band. The team nick-name is the 49ers.
Athletic facilities at California State University, Long Beach include Blair Field for baseball, a stadium operated by the city of Long Beach. It is over 40 years old and was recently renovated and improved. The Walter Pyramid, an 18 story blue pyramid, has several unique structural components, including moveable seating. It can accommodate volleyball and basketball games, as well as other events. Other facilities include a track & field stadium, a softball complex, a pool, tennis courts, a golf course, and a soccer field.
Student athletes receive academic support from the university through the Center for Student-Athlete Services.
Some of the traditions of the Long Beach State Athletic program include an additional nickname for the baseball team, the “Dirtbags.” The name has been used since 1989. Also in 1989, the school colors unofficially changed from brown and gold to black and gold; this was made official in 2000.
